It’s that time of year to show our appreciation and love for those we care about. For all of us animal lovers out there, I’m sure our pets would be in this category of “near and dear” because of their unconditional love and companionship. I think showing appreciation and love in some small way such as taking a walk, a special treat, or even a pet or hug would benefit us and the pets we love.
The human-animal bond brings health and wellbeing to both. The proven enrichment of spending quality time with our animal companions includes:
- Influences positive emotional wellbeing
- Brings a sense of security and acceptance
- Eases depression and anxiety
- Encourages exercise
- Brings comfort in times of stress
- Some say dogs increase socialization among people
- Getting sick less often, not to mention the numerous health conditions that improve
If you are unable to own a pet, you can still benefit from their companionship by:
- Going to a park and feeding the birds
- Going to a dog park and dog watch or a dog show (lots of fun)
- Pet expo, maybe even set up a booth of pet merchandise you’ve handmade
- Going to a rescue shelter to donate or walk a dog
- Going to a petting zoo (it’s not just for children, done it many times)
- Going to a butterfly conservatory
- Pet sitting or dog walking
- Visit a cat cafe’
- Volunteer at an animal sanctuary (if you like equines there are plenty around that would love the help)
Not only do you improve your quality of life, but you improve theirs too. What better way to spend your day than in the company of those you love.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
